Northwest Portland Ministries, Inc. receives Faith in Action grant for community assistance and volunteer development

The focus of the new program is to assist the elderly and persons with disabilities connect to their communities, retain their independence and decrease their sense of isolation.

(Portland, OR) - Northwest Portland Ministries, Inc. (NWPM) is pleased to announce the approval of a $35,000.00 Faith in Action grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Recognizing that some elderly and disabled persons living in Northwest Portland have difficulty performing tasks of daily living making it difficult for them to remain independent in their own residences, Northwest Portland Ministries, Inc. applied for a grant that would allow them to develop a volunteer based program to address their unmet needs.

The Faith in Action/Northwest Portland Ministries program will assist the elderly and persons with disabilities connect to their communities, retain their independence and decrease their sense of isolation. NWPM will do this by building on relationships with participating congregations, coordinating with existing social service networks, and fostering relationships between Faith in Action volunteers and care recipients with one-on-one care-giving.

NWPM has a long history of providing transportation for elderly and disabled populations through volunteers from congregations within the northwest Portland neighborhood. The Faith in Action program will allow us to broaden our services, increase our volunteer base and reach those who are most in need of additional services. These added services will include household chores, cooking, grocery shopping, housecleaning, as well as helping to connect residents to services already available in their community.

Faith in Action is a national interfaith volunteer caregiving initiative supported by a grant from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation with direction and technical assistance provided by Wake Forest University School of Medicine. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, based in Princeton, NJ, is the nation's largest philanthropy devoted exclusively to health and health care. It concentrates its grant making in four goal areas: to assure that all Americans have access to quality health care at reasonable cost; to improve the quality of care and support for people with chronic health conditions; to promote healthy communities and lifestyles; and to reduce the personal, social and economic harm caused by substance abuse.
